Reader post – I have often wondered about the practicalities of keeping chickens in your garden but there are so many problems that spring to mind that I have never managed to get very far with it. How do people stop their chickens from being eaten, won’t the occasional roving fox will have its fill during the day, that is presuming the chickens are not kept in a backyard battery, surely they are allowed to peck away outside their coup.
The proposition of keeping a chicken as a pet came as a surprise to me, I had never thought about doing that since chickens have never seemed all that compassionate, but I suppose they are similar to any other kind of pet, even better, they supply breakfast for you. How envious I am of chickens, they live such unfettered lives; they peck all day, have lots of babies and never have a care in the world (apart from the foxes).
Ed note – Yes chickens are intelligent animals and should be given the chance to express their natural behaviour.
